Chelsea see Ugochukwu, who joined from Rennes for around £23.5 million last summer, as a vital part of their long-term plans. The midfielder is expected to benefit from the development opportunities under Southampton head coach Russell Martin. Chelsea believe that Martin's system and football philosophy align well with their own, making this move ideal for Ugochukwu's growth.

Ugochukwu signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea, including an option for an additional 12 months, and has featured regularly in pre-season matches, including scoring against Inter Milan at Stamford Bridge. He was also part of Mauricio Pochettino's squad in the first half of the previous season, making 13 appearances before a hamstring injury sidelined him until May.

Ugochukwu played 12 Premier League games under Pochettiono before he was sidelined for 6 months with a muscle injury. He scored two goals during the pre-season, against Wrexham and Inter.

Considering his age, Ugochukwu has tremendous potential and talent to become a top midfielder. He is strong, technically gifted, possesses great vision and passing, is solid in defence and can finish the ball.

Southampton are nearing an agreement with Chelsea to secure a season-long loan for midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu. The proposed deal, which is at an advanced stage, will not include an option for Southampton to buy the 20-year-old, as Chelsea have ruled out a permanent sale despite receiving multiple enquiries, David Ornstein reported.
